Misfortune by AFineWar Misfortune by AFineWar
This is #13 from variation 1 at #100ThemesChallenge

Remember how I use to do this whole photomanip thing :P. It's been a while, I haven't been
feeling entirely creative and its less fluid on my laptop, but the spark struck today and this is what I came up with.
Different from my norm but I like the way it turned out.

By the way I wasn't entirely sure which category to put this in :|

Wow. This piece is very well-done and makes the viewer wonder, 'What's happening?'

Very nice use of paints and great techniqe, very mysterious and captivating. The ship is very realistic and the tentacles are well-done. The details are amazing. I love the texture of the water and the light of the stars, very well-done.

And THAT MOON. I am very jealous of it, it looks amazing.

What I love abot this is that it turns on the brain in writers like myself and inspires us. Normally, I do not critique because I'm awful at it, but I had to for this one.

I really cannot find anything negative to say.

Thank you for such a wonderful piece. May many favorite and comment.

This is a beautiful sureal work that has a lot of effort expressed in its canvas in the form of details, shades, or there very idea of a ship travelling through dark waters. I will consider elements of the work seperately.

The water in itself is beautifully drawn. It seems flawless since it reflects the light of the moon and contain the shadow of the ship. It has the impression of depth in it as well, as we move farther away.

The sky with its numerous stars, each seemingly shinning at its own brightness is beautiful while moving near the waters it gets foggy and the stars are not apparent. Then moon is well made with the slight dark outline around it and the light it shines over the ship is what mainly gives the work such beauty. The birds (since bats do not flock), partially apparent in the light also play their part well.

The ship needs little praise over its design and the mast. The ropes connecting the mast with the ship add a lot of detail and while I do not know whether you drew them accurately or not, they look good. The shadow on the ship itself and the murkish colors all look beautiful.

Finally, the lighthouse. Perhaps the only thing that disappointed me was the light emitting from the light house. True it cannot be as bright as the sun is but hte way it suddenly disappeared in the sky makes it look like you were unable to work properly on this portion. The stone on which the lighthouse stands does, to me, look really good.

Over all, I love this work. It is firm in its presentation and confident in its detail.

very nice, and I concur with the two critiques below. I didn't even notice the lighthouse beam, because the ship and moon just hijacks the eye! :D so the tentacles are holding the ship completely out of the water? she looks like the race-built galleon Golden Hind (without the decorations on the sails). interesting flocks of night birds...and you did slight shadows on the waters too

Well it wasn't suppose to be lifting it out of the water, I'm just garbage with those kind of details sometimes. I wanted it to look more like the tentacles were creeping up about to cause some trouble

This work is superb. While I differ in opinion about it being a representitive of the surrealist movement, it has the beauty and luminosity of the great illustrators at the turn of the century. Indeed, it reminds me a great deal of Parrish, yet it remains in your style.

I moved it from surreal category some time ago, I didn't really think it was surreal either but couldn't quite place it.

Thanks for your comment

It has a feeling of expressionism. What do you think?
