Surrealism became an official art movement in 1924 with the publishing of Le Manifeste du Surréalisme (The Surrealist Manifesto)
by André Breton. Breton defines Surrealism as "Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express - verbally,
by means of the written word, or in any other manner - the actual functioning of thought." Breton proposes that the surrealist
should seek access to the unconscious mind in order to make art inspired by this realm.

I was thinking today that there seems to be a lot of sniping, bitching & general unrest around here lately on a variety of subjects, maybe a little more than what is deemed 'normal', maybe I am here too often and see too much of the same? I won't bore you with my opinions about these matters and will show a random selection eye candy for your viewing pleasure instead, this is an art site after-all!

Conceptual is a Photography genre where the artist spends time to make up and construct an idea. Some conceptual shots are taken by pure fluke but for the most part they are created carefully and strategically - deliberately. There are many ways of achieving conceptual pieces without the use of after - manipulation. Man Ray was a very famous Conceptual Artist of his time and so was Eugene Atget. Many try and carry out tribute pieces in memory of Man Ray...

Conceptual can often be blurred with Surreal Photography and actual the line between the two is crossed many times...

Abstract Photography - DistortionAbstract art in general eliminates all or most recognizable references to reality, and instead uses the very basis of how we define reality – shape, line, curve, and color – to influence and provoke feeling and thought. One method of creating an abstract photo is through distortion. Although distortion can be used to create surreal photos as well, a distorted abstract photo will be distorted to such a point where there is little to nothing recognizable from the real world. Distortion can be in the form of either reflection off an imperfect reflective surface or refraction, using the bending of light through a medium, such as glass or water. Below are examples of abstract photographs created with distortion:

Abstract Photography - Circles IIAbstract art in general eliminates all or most recognizable references to reality, and instead uses the very basis of how we define reality – shape, line, curve, and color – to influence and provoke feeling and thought. Focusing in on only one of these elements, a shape is an enclosed geometric figure, such as a square, a hexagon, or a triangle. A circle is also a shape of Euclidean geometry, but it is composed of the set of points in a plane that are equidistant from a given point, the center. Some Key Characteristics of Surrealism:

*Emphasis on the mysterious, marvelous, mythological and irrational in an effort to make art ambiguous and strange.

*Expression of our most basic drives: hunger, sexuality, anger, fear, dread, ecstasy, and so forth.

*The desire to push against the boundaries of socially acceptable behaviors and traditions in order to discover pure thought and the artist's true nature.
